I Spent the month of may, 2019 in oahu, hawaii studying

at the university of hawaii at manoa.

after researching the heck out of it, we decided in our last week that a couple of my friends and i were going to do the highly coveted stairway to heaven hike.

we packed snacks, lunch, plenty of water, a change of clothes and socks, and i brought my camera. we departed at 4:30AM.

the main thing you need to know about this hike is that there are two ways of doing it - the illegal or legal way. The illegal way is straight up and down the stairs, which would have been a round trip hike of about 2-3 hours. getting on the stairs is technically illegal and you could be subjected to a $1,000 fine. The legal way is a gruesome 10 mile round-trip hike through the mud.

Because none of us had done it before, we decided to go up the back way. However, it was so sketchy and muddy and steep that we decided to take the stairs on the way down.

These pictures are in sequential order as they were taken, and as most hikes go, they get better as they go.
